Case Study 5: Air Quality

Project Experience: The Historical Wychwood Barns - Toronto, Ontario

The City of Toronto wanted to redevelop the historical Wychwood TTC barns as an arts and environmental convergence centre for the local community. Working with a large team, PGL reviewed previous environmental work and scoped out required investigations, conducted Phase 2 soil and groundwater sampling, conducted a geophysical survey, assessed and sampled regulated building materials, conducted a code compliance assessment on existing tanks, evaluated and costed remedial options, conducted a preliminary risk assessment to support the risk assessment option, and provided materials for public consultation. The site has now been remediated and construction is ongoing.

The project consisted of providing environmental investigations to allow for costing and selecting a remedial option and designing the project in accordance with the options. The project involved a multidisciplinary team from the City of Toronto and significant public involvement.

The Phase 2 work involved sampling within the car barn structures. The project was conducted in accordance with the City of Toronto schedule and budget which was closely monitored. The contaminants of concern were metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and petroleum hydrocarbons. The work was reviewed by the City of Toronto's environmental technical resource.

The success of this project demonstrates PGL's ability to work with a project team consisting of various stakeholders and shows our ability to provide benefits that are not solely environmental in nature. Effective project management ensured the work was done on time and on budget. Our clear report writing was highlighted when one of our Phase 2 reports was used for conducting a public review. Clear and concise communication to the client enabled them to make informed decisions on their contaminated sites that led to the eventual sale of the majority of the properties. And because of the timelines required by the real estate transaction, much of this work was done while being highly monitored, showcasing PGL's ability to precisely track and update costs and schedule as required.
