PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Case Study 2: Contaminated Sites

Remediation of Residential/Commercial Property Allows Redevelopment Project to Proceed

Our client wished to redevelop a residential/commercial property in the South Granville area of Vancouver. Previous investigation of the site identified possible contamination from a dry-cleaner which operated on a portion of the site for over 30 years.

High levels of dry cleaning related compounds were present in the soil and groundwater immediately below the dry-cleaner. We were concerned that previous investigation of the site by another consultant may have created a path for contaminants to spread.

  • By carrying out a thorough technical investigation, we were able to minimize contaminated soil costs and the risk of spreading contamination.
  • We obtained an Approval in Principle for our Remedial Plan, so that remediation could proceed once demolition work was complete.
  • We successfully characterized and removed all contaminated soil from the site, minimizing soil remediation and overall environmental project costs.
  • Our testing confirmed that no contaminated groundwater remains on the site.
  • Our staff optimized the aggressive construction schedule by working closely with the construction management firm, shoring contractor and remediation contractor.

Our careful approach to the investigation and remediation enabled us to quickly and effectively remediate the site, allowing our client to proceed with the redevelopment project.
